An extensive cottage restoration project in Worcestershire

The clients approached Gray Architecture for design advice on how to sensitively restore their recently purchased property located on the Worcester, Gloucestershire border.

Originally a modest mid-18th-century cottage, the building had seen numerous additions over its lifetime, leading to a confused and incoherent layout.

The clients' aspiration focused on upgrading the long-term maintenance of the property and looking into ways to improve the layout and flow.

Through a rigorous design and briefing process, the project evolved to include additional smaller projects that would transform the property dramatically through a phased approach.

Collaborative design approach

The clients were interested in taking a hands-on role with the build, and were keen to play an active part to understand the building from the very early concept stage through to technical design. Collaboration between Gray Architecture the client, builder and other consultants was key to allow a transparent understanding of the process and to set a clear vision for the project.

An broad goal to positively impact the broader ecology and environmental impact on the site was. A new roof replacement and external insulating render bring coherence to the property, and the new oak frame porch creates a sense of arrival. A new kitchen extension to the rear of the property allows for framed views of the site and dramatically improves the connection to the external courtyard.
